About the book: This volume introduces the life and work of Caravaggio, the notorious rebel of the baroque art world. Through his dramatic use of color, light, and shadow, and spectacular visual inventions, he is considered today one of the most influential painters of all time.
Biography: Gilles Lambert (1928–2011) commuted throughout his life between Rome and his native Paris due to his love for Italy. He translated numerous works on the Seicento from Italian. Together with André Labarthe, he founded the magazine Constellation in the 1950s, and later worked for Le Figaro Littéraire and Paris Match. Lambert has written monographs on Auguste Mariette and Caravaggio.
Gilles Néret (1933–2005) was an art historian, journalist, writer, and exhibition critic. He organized several art retrospectives in Japan and founded the SEIBU Museum and the Wildenstein Gallery in Tokyo. He headed art magazines such as L'Œil and Connaissance des Arts and received the Prix Élie Faure in 1981 for his publications. His TASCHEN publications include Dalí – The Complete Paintings, Matisse, and Erotica Universalis.
