About the book: The photochromes and hand-colored black-and-white photos in this volume show a lost world, an Italy on the cusp of modernity, yet still seeming to dream an age-old dream. They lead to the origins of the photographic image of Italy and reveal narratives and myths that reach far back into the past and continue to shape our collective imaginations to this day.

Biography: Giovanni Fanelli is Professor of Architectural History at the University of Florence and author of numerous books on architectural history and urban history, as well as the art of graphics and photography, which have been translated into several languages. He was scientific director of the Fondazione Ragghianti in Lucca and is editor of several book series for the Roman publisher Laterza.
The graphic designer, photographer, and collector Marc Walter (1949–2018) specialized in old travel photographs, especially photochromes, of which he possessed one of the largest collections worldwide. He has published numerous books with images from his collection and his own photographs. Sabine Arqué is an image editor, editor, and author. She has contributed to numerous publications on travel themes as well as the history of tourism and photography.
