About the book: Architect Rem Koolhaas and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist tell the story of Metabolism – the first avant-garde architecture that did not originate in the West, but in post-war Tokyo. Extensive interviews and rare photos introduce the movement and illuminate its futuristic vision of the future: the dream of cities that grow, expand, and change in harmony with their environment.
Biography: Hans Ulrich Obrist is Artistic Director of the Serpentine Galleries in London. Previously, he was curator at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Since his first exhibition World Soup (The Kitchen Show) in 1991, he has curated over 300 exhibitions and written numerous publications on art, architecture, and culture. In 2011, he was awarded the CCS Bard Award for Curatorial Excellence. Rem Koolhaas is co-founder of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture. Before studying architecture, he worked as a journalist and screenwriter. In 1978, he published Delirious New York, a retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan. His book S,M,L,XL from 1995 summarizes the work of OMA and establishes connections between contemporary society and architecture. In addition to many other international awards and exhibitions, he received the Pritzker Prize (2000) and the Praemium Imperiale (2003). In 2014, he curated the Venice Architecture Biennale and published his book Elements of Architecture, which emerged from his highly acclaimed exhibition at the Biennale.
