From coast to coast, from unknown street performers to legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Miles Davis, and Muddy Waters, Claxton’s extensive photo collection documents the full diversity of the genre and the fleeting spirit of an era. His images shift between the intimate and the spectacular, creating a unique stylistic polyrhythm between the tenderness and the verve of this quintessential American art form.

Biography: William Claxton (1927–2008) began as a photographer for jazz record covers and became known for his portraits of icons such as Chet Baker, Charlie Parker, and Billie Holiday. His work has appeared in publications including Life, Paris Match, and Vogue, and is exhibited in galleries worldwide.

Joachim E. Berendt (1922–2000) was a founding member of Südwestfunk, produced over 250 records, and in 1953 published Das Jazzbuch, which is considered a definitive work on jazz history worldwide.
