Gabbeh carpets are traditionally made by the Gashghai and Lori nomads in the Fars province around Shiraz. Originally, they served as a sleeping mat, as their high pile provides additional warmth. The hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives Gabbeh carpets their characteristic, slightly grainy surface texture. Many models are in natural cream, brown, and gray tones, while vibrant colors like red, yellow, green, and blue are produced with plant dyes. Most Gabbehs are simply designed; when patterns occur, they are stylized motifs from the everyday life of the nomads. Animals such as goats, camels, or dogs, as well as plants and people, are often depicted.
