About the Book: Helmut Newton's SUMO was a titanic book that stood meters high above anything that had ever been attempted in the book market before. This XL edition, updated on the occasion of the 20th anniversary by his wife June Newton, contains 394 images and a booklet that guides us through the creation of this major publishing event – a breathtaking tribute to the larger-than-life photographer.
Biography: Helmut Newton (1920–2004) was one of the most influential photographers of all time. He gained international fame in the 1970s, primarily through his work for the different editions of Vogue. His mix of ambiguous situations, dramatic lighting, and unconventional image composition became his trademark. He received numerous honors, including the distinction Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France.
June Newton (1923–2021) worked as a photographer under the pseudonym Alice Springs from 1970 onwards. Her works were exhibited worldwide and published in Vanity Fair, Interview, Elle, and Vogue, among others. Among the many famous people she portrayed are William S. Burroughs, Catherine Deneuve, Graham Greene, Vivienne Westwood, Ralph Gibson, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Mapplethorpe, Yves Saint Laurent, and Nicole Kidman.
