Biography: Volkmar Essers (born 1944) studied art history, archaeology, and German studies in Bonn, Munich, and Berlin. In 1972, he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the sculptor Johann Friedrich Drake. He worked for many years as a curator at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen and has organized exhibitions on artists such as Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, and Jackson Pollock, among others. Essers is the author of numerous essays and books on 19th and 20th-century art.
