About the Book: He was the only contemporary whom Pablo Picasso considered a serious competitor, with whom he saw himself in friendly rivalry: Henri Matisse, the master of ornamental decoration and luminous, pure colors. An introduction to the work of the most important artist of Classical Modernism, a great loner and radical innovator.

Biography: Volkmar Essers (born 1944) studied art history, archaeology, and German studies in Bonn, Munich, and Berlin. In 1972, he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the sculptor Johann Friedrich Drake. He worked for many years as a curator at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen and has organized exhibitions on artists such as Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, and Jackson Pollock, among others. Essers is the author of numerous essays and books on 19th and 20th-century art.
