The Gashgai are Turkic-speaking, nomadic tribes who live in the region around Shiraz in Southwest Iran. Their Kelims are reversible, flat wool carpets created through the characteristic slit weave. This creates small slits in the weft where the colors change. Typical patterns of these carpets include rhombuses, squares, stripes, and Caucasian star motifs. Strong colors such as blue, yellow, red, green, and beige are used for the design, giving the carpets their vibrant and traditional appeal.
