About the Book: Sir William Hamilton, vulcanologist and envoy of the British Embassy in Naples, amassed an invaluable collection of ancient Greek vases, which he sold to the British Museum in London in 1772. Before the pieces were shipped to England, he commissioned Pierre-François Hugues d’Hancarville, an adventurous art connoisseur and dealer, to document the vases in word and image. This resulted in a masterpiece of Classicism, which TASCHEN revives with this high-quality reprint.

Biography: Madeleine Huwiler studied classical archaeology, ancient history, and ancient Egyptian at the University of Fribourg. She was involved as a research assistant in several excavations and exhibitions. Sebastian Schütze was a research assistant at the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max Planck Institute for Art History) in Rome. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici in Naples and a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. From 2003–2009, he held the Bader Chair in Southern Baroque Art at Queen’s University in Kingston. Since 2009, he has held a professorship for Modern Art History at the University of Vienna.
