The Gashgai are Turkic-speaking, nomadic tribes who live in the region around Shiraz in southwestern Iran. Their kilims are counted among the traditional, double-sided flat weaves made of wool. Characteristic is the so-called slit weaving, in which small slits are created in the weft during color changes. The carpets are richly decorated with classic Gashgai motifs such as rhombuses, squares, stripes, and Caucasian star patterns. Strong colors such as blue, yellow, red, green, and beige are used for the design, which give the carpets a lively and diverse effect.
