The Gashgai are Turkic-speaking, nomadic tribes who live in the region around Shiraz in southwestern Iran. Their kilims are among the traditional, reversible flat-woven fabrics made of wool. Characteristic is the so-called slit tapestry, in which small slits are created in the weft when the color changes. The carpets are richly decorated with classic Gashgai motifs such as rhombuses, squares, stripes, and Caucasian star patterns. Vibrant colors such as blue, yellow, red, green, and beige are used for the design, giving the carpets a lively and diverse effect.
