The Gashgai are Turkic-speaking, nomadic tribes who live in the region around Shiraz in southwestern Iran. Their kilims are among the traditional, double-sided flat weaves made of wool. Characteristic is the so-called slit weave, where small slits in the weft are created during color changes. The carpets are richly decorated with classic Gashgai motifs such as rhombuses, squares, stripes, and Caucasian star patterns. Strong colors such as blue, yellow, red, green, and beige are used for the design, which give the carpets a vibrant and expressive effect.
